Best ways, foods, supplements to build my immune system?

Hi ! I try to eat well with a balanced diet and I take supplements like vitamins, minerals, probiotics,  about 12 different supplements a day. For instance, I take Vitamin C, 500 mg x 3 a day, B-complex, kelp, Magnesium, Zinc, etc….

My friend has suggested that I add beta Glucan to help build/keep immunity?

I looked at this in a health store and it’s kinda expensive.

Is this a good choice? Is there something better? I thought vitamin C (ascorbic acid) was the best?

Thanks.

  1. Save your money and stick with foods. Organic fruits and veggies do a better job at strongly building and maintaining immune health and it’s lighter on the wallet. For ex: I consume a 3000 daily caloric diet, but I always incorporate 10 servings of fruits and raw veggies into this palate. Why? I never get sick. So, it works. It’s also sound judgement to cut out those “foods” that rob nutrients like, for one, refined sugar, and for two, partially hydrogenated veg. oils. This is a no-brainer, literally. Not only is it not good for brain health, but it also places your body in an acidic state, leaving you susceptible to diseases. Everytime my parents turned around, when I was a child, I was always taking Amoxycilin, Tetracycline, some crap for bacterial infections. I had many episodes of viral infections…colds that were innumerible as a kid. I was a sugaraholic. I loved it, and I was wired constantly. It didn’t stop in my teens and 20’s, but after so many years, I couldn’t take anymore of it and did my own research. For a time, I got into the supplements like you, taking every name of supplement I couldn’t even pronounce for lots of money per bottle. They didn’t work as well as whole foods. Whole, raw foods are impecable at what they do for you. They’re not only foods, but they’re nature’s medicine for your body. Believe it or not, a natural food store owner convinced me of this. So, it was no surprise I only shopped at his store for just the topicals and not the supplements. He gave me the nitty gritty on what it was all really about, plus, he’s a biochemist and a professor at a local college, so that helped a bit.
I hope this helped some, if not, at least I placed my input. Good luck to you.

  2. I can tell you what I take 🙂

Raw colostrum (or a probiotic drink if you don’t live in California, or kefir)
    CLA
3-4 servings of oily fish a week (omega3s)
2 oranges a day (ascorbic acid)
2 tablespoons peanut butter (unsalted, organic, without anything else added)

Remember it doesn’t make sense to take pills because vitamins and minerals are better absorbed in foods than in pills. However CLA is almost impossible to take at the amount it is in pills.

  3. i dont think it’s very good for you to take that many supplements. If you have too much of certain vitamins (Vitamin A, etc) it can become toxic. I would try to stick to healthy, nutrient filled foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains.

  4. Beta Glucan is a very good supplement. It’s in the probiotic family yet it goes one step further.

I am not sure what price you saw the BG for, but a 30 day supply should run you around $59-62 depending on the brand. Yes, this is a bit expensive but if you have a serious immune deficiency it will build you back up. BG is taken on an empty stomach and not with any of your other supplements. It must be taken alone.

Vitamin C is a middle of the road supplement. It’s good for overall protection but not nearly as good as several other supplements specifically for immune defense.

If you can’t afford BG, you can add pomegranate juice to your diet. Pomegranate juice is a great anti-oxident and will also help to boost your immune system.

Most berries will also do some boosting.

There are also many nutritional juices on the market that aid in not only boosting the immune system but have many different micro nutrients along with vitamins and minerals.

When I started drinking my favorite juice I stopped taking many of my supplements as they were not longer needed.

Make sure that you read the labels of the juices good as many of them have additives and preservatives that you really don’t want in your juice.

  5. Vitamin C, Echinacea, Vitamin E, oil of oregano, coenzyme Q10, there are all kinds. Try taking the vitamin c as ester c, it is better absorbed in the body, and take 1000mg 3 times a day. Vitamin C is water soluble so you can’t take too much of it so don’t worry about an overdose. I wouldn’t worry about taking the glucogan, you seem to bo taking enough as it is and there are so many different products out there for immune system, that if you took all of them, you would go broke! I would say keep up with what you’re doing and maybe up the vitamin C, otherwise your doin pretty good.
